Hello World, Im Curtis Thomas

Hi everyone, I'm Curtis. As of January 21st, 2026 Im a third-year Bachelor's in ICT student studying at OAMK Oulu, Finland. The majority of my experience is with full stack MERN web development, and recently I have developed an interest in robotics after an interesting free choice course in university. I have been working on building my own startup over the last few years while studying, which has helped me massively improve lots of my technical and soft skills. In my spare time, I enjoy indoor bouldering, coding, and computer games. I try to read every morning while drinking coffee.

I decided to start a blog for a few different reasons:

As a digital journal
To improve my writing skills for future thesis work
As an escape from LinkedIn
To have a creative outlet
To share my learnings

I will be writing about the things I find cool in life, and as they happen. To start with, I will be writing about Oulu and the startup scene here, because that's what I'm currently doing. I will also be writing about my tech progress. I think I want to be a software architect in the future. And I will be writing about any traveling I do, cultural and social lessons I learn, and things I think are important.

I am at the start of my tech career. I made a career move after spending over eight years in the British Army as a Vehicle Mechanic and moved to Finland to be with my partner. This is an exciting time for me because I have the life skills of a full previous career, and the new opportunities that come with being a student in a vibrant tech-forward city. I have found myself thriving in this environment, and as I move forward with my studies and other opportunities that pop up. I will be sharing hot insights, learnings, and thoughts.
